Life’s Worries

How to put on your pants

Doing things differently is a good way to train your brain. Do you always hold your tooth brush in your right hand? Next time use your left hand. It could feel weird, but the brain has to train other connections to do the brushing properly. Your mind is namely being feeded with new information.

Another example? Do you always use your right leg first by putting on your pants. Change it, left leg first. Wanna start your day completely different? Here some put-on-your-pants-moves. Don’t try this at home. Or should you?

Risk the risks

Life is all about uncertainties. Are you risky or are you cautious? David Spiegelhalter‘s proper title is Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk. He shows us how to use statistics to face up to life’s major risks.

One of the biggest risks is to be too cautious, as David says. Being too cautious could be the greatest killer. It kills the fun part in life. So live with a heart and enjoy! Let others do the maths…

Challenge your convictions

Of course I have my own presuppositions, but I always keep looking for a lovely paradigm shift. (Mmmm, but isn’t that a conviction as well? Ahhhhh…… )

As Einstein said: ‘A problem cannot be solved from the same state of consciousness it was created in.’ It takes great out-of the box-thinkers to create and innovate, against the public opinion. Like Henry Ford said: ‘If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.’

Are you married to your convictions? So, start putting your comfort zone to the test right now. Look for all these boxes in your life and begin outthinking them. You know, if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

Assumptions, I presume?

A nice video to challenge your own assumptions and convictions. Assumptions? Ask the Japanese man….

Eating with your mind

Recently I read ‘In defense of food‘ by Michael Pollan. Very refreshing and entertaining book about theories and facts on food.

Here one example that shows that not only the food matters, but also the mind. What or how you think about food is important for what it does to you.

In an experiment a group of Americans was shown the word ‘chocolate cake’ and they were asked which association came up in their mind. ‘Feeling guilty’ was the most heard reaction. And the French eaters mainly said: ‘Celebration’. Same cake, different taste……

Feeling guilty or celebration?

The Horse Boy

A couple of days ago I saw a documentary called “The Horse Boy”. It’s the heartwarming tale of 6-year old Rowan, who has autism, and his parents’ quest to find healing, relief and improve the quality of their son’s life.

Having tried all sorts of therapies, diets, textbook advice to get a hold of his stressful tantrums, Rowan finds a real sense of relaxation and enjoyment sitting and lying on the back of a horse. And it inspires his dad, and after some back-and-forth also his mum, to go on an epic journey to and through Mongolia – known for its horse riding nomads and its shaman traditions.

What follows is a story of doubt – taking Rowan out of his trusted environment: are we good parents, will the stress not traumatize their little boy. A story of adjusted expectations. And a story of love, hope and joy.

Watching The Horse Boy left me with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the sensibility of the animals – in this documentary ranging from horses to goats and reindeer – and the patience and care they showed towards Rowan, helping him to relax and open up. And gratitude for the mysticism of nature and beyond, and the people most connected to it. You almost want to pack your bags and spend the rest of your life in a yurt… Almost…

Go watch it, here is the trailer.

One giant fridge door

We register so much unconsciously, the whole world is one giant fridge door. At least that’s what illusionist and mentalist Derren Brown is trying to proof here, I guess. Or is it just a hypnotic mind trick? I am not sure what to think of it. At least it is food for thought.

He challenges two advertising experts to come up with an advertising campaign in 20 minutes. “You go with the very first things that come into your head”, as Derren Brown says. But what do these two have in their heads?
